AAWA Winter/Spring Juried Show

Two of my pieces were accepted in the upcoming AAWA Juried show held at the Ypsilanti Library.  They will be on exhibit from February 11th through March 29th.

The Juror for this show is Denise Lisiecki, who is the Director of the Art School at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. She teaches painting and is represented by galleries in many regions of the US. Her work can be found in over 50 museums and corporate collections. She has received creative artists grants from the Michigan Council for the Arts and the National Endowment of the Arts.

AAWA's Busy Summer

Pop-x Pavilion coming in October 2015

AAWA "Team Pop-x"
Ann Arbor Women Artists is busy this summer. We have a team of artists preparing an art installation to go in the Pop-x Festival. Pop-x is a ten day festival, October 15-24, of Pop up art pavilions in Liberty Plaza Park. You can read more about it here: http://www.annarborartcenter.org/pop-x/.  Our team is led by members Susan Clinthorne and Lidia Kaku. We will have an exquisite pod that is a tribute to "The Picnic". Former EMU art professor Ellen Wilt is our muse behind this idea. I am  participating and it is a joyful, creative group!

David Zinn and AAWA Vice President Patricia Davenport
In addition to our team working on Pop-x, AAWA held a wonderful workshop with talented local artist, David Zinn.  He showed us some of the secrets behind his whimsical street art that is gaining global recognition. Check out David's website at http://zinnart.com.  His teaching style is as fun as his artwork.

AAWA Board Art Show at the University of Michigan Union
AAWA also held our first Board Art show in five years at the University of Michigan Union. It was very well received and we have scheduled another exhibition at the same spot for May 2016.

Ann Arbor Women Artists

This season is a busy time for me, teaching and serving as President of Ann Arbor Women Artists.

Ann Arbor Women Artists is a very active arts organization with a headquarters that houses studios, classes, programs, and social events. We offer our members exhibition opportunities at various places in Ann Arbor,  including all Sweetwaters Coffee Houses, Esquire Interiors (an interior design center), the NEW Center (offices for local nonprofit groups), The Women's Center, and the Community Television Network studios. We hold 2-3 juried art shows, artist's workshops and artist's demonstrations.  This group is now open to artists of all genders, but the tradition of being a women's group that nurtures women in the arts continues to be our mission.

We offer a Speakers Program which is a series of lectures by artists, curators and art educators. Here is our schedule for the upcoming season:

Good Things Come To Those Who Wait

From Ann Arbor News Article

I am thrilled to announce that I will establish a new art studio above the Dancing Dog Gallery. Formerly the Herb David Guitar Studio.  This historic building is being renovated to accommodate a new elegant gallery with several artists studios on the second floor.

Downtown Ann Arbor is a nice mix of restaurants, theaters and stores. The Dancing Dog  Gallery is sure to become a popular local art destination. This is something I have waited for and I am grateful to  be a part of this venture.

Squiggly Line Figure Drawing

ⓒ Barbara Goodsitt

Ann Arbor Women Artists recently rented a space where we have several artists studios, hold workshops, meetings, lectures and life drawing sessions.

I joined the life drawing group. Here is my most recent figure drawing done with colored pencils. I  experimented with a squiggly line technique that was inspired by John Smolko's beautiful colored pencil paintings. This was done in a two hour sitting.

Happy New Year!
Best of luck to those out there who are trying to improve themselves.  Let us hope we always find new goals to work towards.

I will be joining a figure drawing group held with Ann Arbor Women Artists. This New Year also  finds me teaching more colored pencil drawing classes (see previous post) as well as developing a new course to help artists beak through "creative blocks" with creative exercises.

February 11th - AAWA 60th Anniversary Gala

Art by Barbara Goodsitt
Ann Arbor Women Artists (and a few good men) is the largest arts organization in Washtenaw County.  I have enjoyed being an active member for several years. This group has been a great resource for artists in our community. We have several local venues where members can exhibit & sell their artwork. AAWA also offers a series of free lectures in our educational speakers program, as well as many art workshops led by nationally known artists.  AAWA was started 60 years ago, and this year we are celebrating our anniversary with a Gala Event: a Venetian Masked Ball. This event is open to the public. We will be honoring several important local arts professionals and there will be live music, food and a cash bar!  It is reasonably priced at $10 per ticket, so please join us at Washtenaw Community College on February 11th for a great evening.

Helping through Art....

Things are getting busy. I am happy to announce that the two prints I donated to the Circle of Art raised $90 to help feed those in need. Saline Picutre Company, Side Door Gallery in Dexter, and Food Gatherers teamed up for this wonderful event. As an artist, I sometimes feel that what I do is frivolous in a world that needs so much fixing. Fund raising art auctions for non-profit groups offer me the opportunity to make a difference.

On a lighter note, I have added another venue where I will be exhibiting art this summer: Bab's Underground Lounge on Ashley Street in Ann Arbor. First time I will be showing my work in a BAR!! I will be showing a few pieces there from early July through September. If you get thirsty, drop on by for a drink ;)

Here are some photos of my art show at Sweetwaters on 123 West Washington Street in Ann Arbor. This show is sponsored by the Ann Arbor Women Artist organization.
