Award Winning Art for Northville Art House - FINE POINT: Juried Colored Pencil Exhibition

I was honored to be the juror for this exhibit at the Northville Art House.  All of the artwork in this show is beautiful. This show runs through the beginning of June. It is worth the drive.

Plein Air Painting

County Farm Park

Argo Park
I am sharing some pastel work done in a Plein Air Workshop led by artist  Nora Venturelli.  Nora is an accomplished artist and University of Michigan Lecturer.  Nora conducts workshops in the US and Italy.  Her demonstrations and critiques are spot on. She lives and breathes the art spirit.

Working "En plein air " is a French phrase meaning open (in full) air.  I was given a portable french easel a few years ago.  I have had wonderful experiences every time I venture outdoors to paint. It is kind of magical to create art in nature.  You can lose yourself in the beauty of the scenery that surrounds you. My painting is more loose when I work outside.  I have a lot of work ahead of me to improve my technique with pastels, and oil painting in the future.  I continue to love working with colored pencils in the studio, but I look forward to growing as an artist by working en plein air.

New Years

Life Drawing
ⓒ Barbara Goodsitt

Happy New Year!
Best of luck to those out there who are trying to improve themselves.  Let us hope we always find new goals to work towards.

I will be joining a figure drawing group held with Ann Arbor Women Artists. This New Year also  finds me teaching more colored pencil drawing classes (see previous post) as well as developing a new course to help artists beak through "creative blocks" with creative exercises.

2013 Annual Arts and Cultural Guide from the Arts Alliance

Ann Arbor's Arts Alliance  2013 'ANN'ual Arts and Cultural Guide came out this weekend. The guide was published in the local edition of the New York Times, and I was very honored to see my artwork on page 9.

The Arts Alliance promotes leadership and creates opportunities for artists and cultural organizations that stimulate economic development and build strong, vibrant communities in our region.
The Arts Alliance is a county-wide organization working to create an environment where culture and creativity can flourish and the arts are accessible to all. We’re an assembly of organizations and people just like you who believe in the power of arts and culture to make our world a better place. The Arts Alliance does the behind-the-scenes work that helps our nonprofit cultural organizations, creative businesses, and artists do what they do best: create great art, celebrate our cultural richness, and help the rest of us understand our world a little bit better.

Working on Sanded Pastel Paper

UART Pastel Paper Website

The UART Company makes a great sanded pastel paper that is used by many colored pencil artists.  A very talented Michigan colored pencil artist, Lynda Schumacher, introduced me to this paper.  I was used to working on  acid free illustration board or Stonehenge Paper (which I also love).  It took me a while to feel comfortable working on this sanded surface, but I finally did a piece I was proud of on the 800 grit paper. This drawing is of a Red Tower Ginger Plant.  I really like the softer more painterly quality.
I submitted the image of this piece to UART and they posted it in their gallery!  I am tickled to be there, among many colored pencil artists whose work I have admired for a long time.

Broad Street Artists Collective

I am happy to announce that I am moving my home studio to the Broad Street Artists Collective in April.
This group of artists studios, housed on Broad Street in Dexter, Michigan, was established in the early 1990's .
Barb will be working on colored pencil, mosaics and painting, and will also be available to teach privately in her new studio. Look for our open house during the Ann Arbor Art Walk, and other events.
