I have two pieces that were selected for a juried exhibit, Michigan Colored Pencil 2017, at the Padzieski Gallery in the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center in Dearborn, MI. The reception is Thursday, October 19 at 6 PM. The exhibit runs from Oct. 12 - Nov. 9. Both pieces are colored pencil and solvent. Love Birds was done on heavy acid free illustration board. Three Sunflowers was done on Stonehenge drawing paper

I relish making art with vivid color.  Animals, flowers, landscapes, musical instruments, and food are my favorite subjects.  The process of creating and executing a piece is joyful and meditative.  Collectors who have my work  have  told me that looking at my work makes them happy.  That is a very rewarding thing to hear.

I am doing a series of produce in my glass bowls.  Here are some Michigan cherries.

Our Michigan cherry crop was drastically reduced this year due to the bizarre weather.  I keep encouraging better ecological policies by joining environmental groups and writing to my legislators. I also drive a hybrid car, and recycle.  If those in charge would have acted more responsibly in formulating our energy policy, we might be in better shape. I hope that we can work to lessen the damage done to Mother Earth.

I just took a great art workshop from Jaclyn Wukela. Here is the result, a finished portrait.

Jackie's approach to portraits is much different than my usual way of drawing. I like to start with 'local color' and then add different layers to bring out contrasts. She had us do "sequence layering" starting with black and then layering successively lighter tones over that. At one point this face was entirely orange, but it all worked out in the end. It was a very good workshop and I recommend her classes to anyone who has a chance to attend. I hope to share some of these techniques about achieving a good range of values in skin tones with my Rec and Ed students.

The workshop was put on by the Detroit Chapter of the Colored Pencil Society of America. Don't miss the current show in Dearborn:
Midwest Color 2008 at the Padzieski Art Gallery, in the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center,15801 Michigan Avenue, Dearborn, MI 48126
The exhibition will run through November 1, 2008 and it is really outstanding.
